Rukhsana Ismail Named Mayor of Rotherham, Pledges Community-First Focus

The Mayor of Rotherham Councillor Rukhsana Ismail

Rukhsana Ismail has officially taken on the role of Mayor of Rotherham for 2025–2026, becoming the borough’s First Citizen and the 120th Mayor at the Council’s annual ceremonial meeting. Her appointment marks a new chapter in community leadership as she aims to place the people of Rotherham at the heart of her work.

With a commitment to inclusivity, service, and empowerment, Mayor Ismail brings both passion and extensive experience to the role. She described her appointment as “a very big responsibility and an honour”, expressing deep excitement to begin her mayoral duties.

Mayor of Rotherham Draws Strength from Personal and Professional Journey

Although born in Sheffield, Rukhsana Ismail moved to Birmingham during her early years. She later returned to South Yorkshire after marriage, eventually settling in Rotherham in 2010 with her young family. Her personal journey has been one of resilience, determination, and a desire to lead by example—particularly for her three daughters.

The Mayor of Rotherham is proud of her role as a mother and sees her achievements as a way to inspire not only her children but also the broader community. She credits her drive to set high standards and foster a positive, can-do attitude as the foundation for her public service.

“If you had asked me 10 to 15 years ago that I’d become a Councillor, a Magistrate, a Chief Executive Officer or even the Mayor, I’d say ‘carry on dreaming’. If I can do all of that, I think anyone can,” she said.

From Volunteer to CEO: A Story of Growth and Service

Mayor Ismail’s path to public service began when she returned to education as an adult, completing her GCSEs and A Levels. During this period, she volunteered with a charity supporting survivors of domestic abuse and human trafficking in Sheffield. Her dedication led her to a full-time role, quickly rising through the ranks to become Chief Executive Officer of a charity in Nottinghamshire.

In addition to her work in the charity sector, the Mayor of Rotherham holds numerous civic roles. She is a Magistrate, chairs the South Yorkshire Community Foundation Panel for Rotherham, and serves as Vice Chair of Unison (Sheffield Branch). She is also a trustee for Rotherham Age UK, Rotherham Hospice, and the South Yorkshire Eating Disorder Association.

Mayor to Support Four Charities That Represent Rotherham’s Values

During her mayoral year, Councillor Ismail will support four local charities that align with her core values of compassion, care, and community empowerment:

  • The Rotherham Hospice Trust (Charity No. 700356) – Offers palliative care to adults facing terminal illness and supports their families.
  • Age UK Rotherham (Charity No. 1039771) – Provides services and activities to improve the lives of older people in the community.
  • Sense Rotherham (Charity No. 289868) – Supports individuals with complex communication needs, including autism, deafblindness, and sensory impairments.
  • Apna Haq (Charity No. 1169502) – Empowers BME women and girls affected by domestic violence and abuse.

“These charities represent the heart of our community—caring for people at every stage of life and in times of greatest need,” the Mayor said. “They reflect the compassion, strength, and diversity of Rotherham.”

Looking Ahead: Community Engagement and Family Support

Mayor Ismail is particularly excited to engage with community groups and frontline workers who support Rotherham’s most vulnerable residents. She believes that seeing the work done at the grassroots level will keep her grounded and focused on the issues that matter most.

In a personal highlight, the Mayor of Rotherham shared her excitement that one of her daughters will serve as her consort during the mayoral year—a touching reminder of how her journey continues to inspire those closest to her.

As the new Mayor of Rotherham, Rukhsana Ismail brings a wealth of personal experience, community involvement, and a clear vision of service to the role. Her tenure promises to be one that champions local causes, empowers vulnerable populations, and celebrates the diversity of Rotherham’s communities.
